KYMMEL, STRITZKY, KUNTZENDORFF…, gardens and mansions. Somehow even Pillar of Shame.

Riga has never grown so big to overcome this Area or rather this Place has never fully reached the status of traditional City pattern and never fully accepted the strictness of perimetral city and closed blocks both – literally and in everyday lifestyle.

Cozy settled on the Dune of the banks of ancient Baltic Lake KIMMEL brewery along with adjacent neighborhood still maintains fully no preservable Charm of 19th. Century.

However, The Proposals maintains ambition to intelligently balance between respect of The Big City with its strict demands and traditions and strive to preserve openness, large courtyards and historical values characteristic to given Locality.

Building  on the top of the hill is complicated task because The Hill itself is manifestation of The Place not requiring any intrusion from outside to stress statement of being A Hill.

Proposal of TAUTOS NAMAI pretends to follow the concept where Object respectfully “takes place”  thus turning to be organic “part of the Place”, but not becoming or creating A New Place.

In other words – House is not on the top of the Hill, House is not a Node, house is

“Part of the Hill”.

Even more – it is a Group of houses with different functions around a common Courtyard resembling historically established way of perceiving separate household or formal establishment in Baltic environment.

When creating the construction, the visual-spatial interaction of the City Centre – Daugava was considered important, trying as much as possible to avoid disrupting this connection with massive, homogeneous buildings or groups of buildings.

Values – Daugava line, historical division into free island groups (not strict, in building blocks characteristic to the city centre), transparency from the city side and back to the city, as well as the assumption that this place allows deviations from mathematically linear construction (both in a horizontal and vertical perspective), which is typical of the districts of the centre of Riga.
